About this listen

The first in a sparkling new 1950s seaside mystery series, featuring sharp-eyed former nun Nora Breen.

In a house like Gulls Nest, curiosity might prove fatal . . .

After thirty years in a convent, Nora Breen has thrown off her habit. Her fellow sister Frieda has gone missing and it’s up to Nora to find her. Nora’s only clue is that Frieda was last seen at Gulls Nest boarding house. So she travels down to the seaside town of Gore-on-Sea, takes a room and settles in to watch and listen. Over dubious – and sometimes downright inedible – dinners, Nora gathers evidence about the other lodgers. At long last, she has found an outlet for her powers of observation and, well, nosiness.

When one of the lodgers is found dead, Nora decides she must find the murderer. Not least because she suspects the victim knew Frieda. Could solving this mystery help her to understand what has happened to her friend?

‘Kidd has imagination to die for and a real command of plot and character.’ Guardian

Another amazing novel from Jess Kidd. A fantastic central character and an incredible story. Loved it. Siobhan’s narration adds to the story. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a humorous, heartfelt and human story.

The story reminded me a bit of a Muriel Spark.
Lodgers in a boarding house. The story highlights starkly just how times have changed. I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was perfect for this story. In fact the narration was wonderful, I hope Siobhan McSweeney does more.

A Delight to Listen to, Every Page!

A great story - nice and gentle but reels you in with twists and intrigue. A must read for fans of the Thursday Murder Club. Siobhán McSweeney does a great job narrating. Would recommend!

A friend asked who my favourite female narrator was. Shame on me I had none ( Marian Keyes reading her own books doesn’t count). Now feel I can now start my list though with Siobhan McSweeney! Perfectly cast for this story - sensitive to the characters good and bad.
And to the story - main character with a back story, beginnings of a love interest early on, set in a guest house with a range of characters each interesting enough to have a story each, and concluding with a tidy ending - all set for the next one …
Now onto the search of next best female narrator -

Gentle murder
