Galaxy 'Alex' Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale's freshman class. A dropout and the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved crime, Alex was hoping for a fresh start. But a free ride to one of the world's most prestigious universities was bound to come with a catch.

Alex has been tasked with monitoring the mysterious activities of Yale's secret societies - well-known haunts of the rich and powerful. Now there's a dead girl on campus and Alex seems to be the only person who won't accept the neat answer the police and campus administration have come up with for her murder.

Because Alex knows the secret societies are far more sinister and extraordinary than anyone ever imagined. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And sometimes they prey on the living . . .

Loved the story. It's a really clever mixture of reality and make belive which creates a really compelling story. The characters are strong and the story goes at a decent pace so I was always dying to get back on and hear the next part. The only slight niggle is the narration is very earnest, so some of the funnier lines lost a bit of their impact. Looking forward to the sequel though.

Completely absorbing book

An absorbing story, but darker, more brutal, than I expected! Heading back to Bardugo's YA books for a while...

Good but gory!

loved the character of Alex Stern because she is not good and she's not bad, but trying to figure out how to live in the world as it exists.

this adds some believable ballast to a book that is otherwise pure escapism, The Secret History but with magic. Bardugo got the balance exactly right.

loved the narration, though I know that's a very personal thing. finished the book in one gulp and immediately bought the sequel.

engrossing and diverting

This was excellently read and I was really drawn in, with a few very haunting moments too.

Dark and gripping

It is a good story, but probably better to be read than listened. It's a bit hard to keep track of all the weird names when listening.

Better read than heard

As a middle aged man who usually reads YA books (like Leigh Bardugo's other works), I found this adult book still kept the magic, intrigue and pace you usually find in YA books. Just with a lot more adult themes. I hope she writes more in this series.

Awesome stuff

I was sceptical at first (probably the first hour) as I was so used to Grishavers that this was a big change but with very well known voice. I got really into the story after that one hour and loved it! The performance of Lauren was great as usual, Michael was really good too! Hope we will get the sequel soon enough as I can’t wait! For now, I will be re-listening all the Grishavers and Ninth house!

Amazing

This was my first audiobook so it took me a while to get into but overall i enjoyed it! I think I will get Hell Bent but not for a while, my TBR (or TBL -to be listened-) list is very long ahah, would 100% recommend it but just be warned it did take a while to get going and the action happened more towards the middle/end!

Slow burn but very good!

A refreshing new story but with all the excitement and magic of her other types of stories. Fantastic characters and some great twists at the end.. roll on the second installment :)

Another great book from Leigh Bardugo!

The setting - Yale and its secret societies - is very compelling, and the book's inclusion of issues around sexual consent and bodily autonomy makes it feel very of-the-moment, in a good way. Bardugo could have left those elements out but doesn't shy away from them. I enjoyed the idea of each House focusing on a specific type of magic, and the fantasy elements - ghosts, magic, hell-beasts, portals - are 'soft' enough to never bog the story down in explanations.
The main characters are enjoyable to be around, especially Alex, Dawes, and Turner.
For me, the ending let it down slightly, adding a layer of unnecessary magical conspiracy on top of what felt like a plausible motive for the eventual villain. To say more is to risk spoilers, and it might work perfectly well for other readers. I'm not sure if I will pursue the story in the sequel, but overall I enjoyed the novel.
The narrators do a very good job, especially Lauren Fortgang.

Compelling dark academia with slightly weak ending
