About this listen

Nominated in Best Female Narrator at the Audie Awards 2020.

She must fight to prove herself...before it's too late.

DCI Jane Tennison came through the ranks the hard way, opposed and resented at every step by her male colleagues.

When a prostitute is found murdered in her bedsit, the Metropolitan police set to work finding the perpetrator of this brutal attack. DNA samples lead them straight to known criminal George Marlow. The police think they've found their man, but things are not quite what they seem....

Desperate to remove all doubt around her suspect, Tennison struggles to make the charges stick. And then a second body turns up.

With the team against her, DCI Jane Tennison is in a race against time to catch a dangerous criminal - and prove she's just as tough as any man.

Baseded on the award-winning TV series starring Helen Mirren, the complete and unabridged Prime Suspect trilogy is now available for the first time in audio.

Liked the story. Rachel Atkins captured the chacter of DI Tennison well (if a little shrieky at times).

I thoroughly enjoyed this, the first book in the Prime Suspect series and my introduction to Jane Tennison. I was for her right from the start because despite the dislike and scepticism from her team she worked hard to achieve her result. She was also the sort of person who wouldn't stand for any nonsense and I'm looking forward to more books with her as the main character. It was a book I just couldn't put down but if you go for a Lynda La Plante book I promise you that you won't be able to put it down. They're absolute page turners. This is the third Lynda La Plant book I've listened to, but oh, how I do wish Audible would make the Anna Travis series available. At the moment I'm listening to the first in that series, Above Suspicion from RNIB's Talking Book Library which is a lending service but as soon as they start coming out (and I do hope they will) on Audible I'll be going for them right away.

Funny how you just see Helen Mirren perfectly embodying DCI Tennison even from the written word. Still very worth a listen as the story never lacks pace and even tho you might know the ending it still keeps you gripped.

Still a cracking story

This was my first foray into Lynda La Plante's writing and I was very impressed ... the plot kept moving along at a breathtaking pace and her slant on male v female in the top job was refreshingly realistic... sadly !!
I much enjoyed the book, Racel Atkins narration was superb, and I look forward to listening to the next in the series. Thank you all round !

not bad at all !

This is well-written, well-read and a joy to listen to. I saw the TV programme first and could not help imaging the cast since so much of the dialogue is identical. But this book is great!

Fabulous

I listened to the 3 books in the ‘Widows’ series and the follow up book ’Buried’. I enjoyed them so thought I’d give this a listen.
The story was good but it feels so outdated listening to it in this day and age…still that’s the way it was back then. Being of a certain age myself I remember it well. Younger listeners may not get many of the references used or comprehend just how hard it was for women to be taken seriously it what was perceived to be ‘a man’s world’ which may impact on the credibility and therefore enjoyment of the book.

Enjoyable but outdated
