When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Really enjoyable sub-Lovecraftian thrillers, nicely written and very involving. Wish they'd put a bit more effort into fact checking, they repeatedly talk about scurvy being a consequence of vitamin D deficiency and causing bone softening and joint deformities when that is actually rickets. It doesn't really matter but many of the characters are academics in anthropology, genetics and medicine: they would know this.

You must read the relic first to really get this book, but this book too has a brilliant plot and characters. Unusual mix of sci fi, adventure and murder. This book is true escapism, brilliantly read and superbly written. Hours of true escapism at its best.

Enjoyed this and learnt so much about the ‘mole people’ after Googling. Love the characters esp the one from the FBI but I worked out the wee twist at the end - didn’t detract any thing from the plot for me.
