A SUNDAY TIMES HISTORICAL FICTION BOOK OF THE MONTH

June, 1878. The body of a boy is pulled from the depths of the River Thames, suspected to be the beloved missing child of the widely admired Liberal MP Ralph Gethin.

Four months earlier. Harriet is a young maid newly employed at Finton Hall. Fleeing the drudgery of an unwanted engagement in the small village where she grew up, Harriet is entranced by the grand country hall; she is entranced too by her glamorous mistress Clara Gethin, whose unearthly singing voice floats through the house. But Clara, though captivating, is erratic. The master of the house is a much-lauded politician, but he is strangely absent. And some of their beautiful belongings seem to tell terrible stories.

Unable to ignore her growing unease, Harriet sets out to discover their secrets. When she uncovers a shocking truth, a chain of events is set in motion that could cost Harriet everything, even her freedom…

Spellbinding

Captivating from start to finish, with wonderful characterisation, a gripping, subtle plot, and meticulous research. And a brilliant performance from Harriet Carmichael that made me want to discover her other work.

Not your usual upstairs downstairs story

I liked the cerebral wrangling the main character undertook when deciding what to do about her future or who to trust in the household where she worked.

Together with testing her loyalty, her scruples were challenged too, as she navigated complex relationships with her seemingly underhand employers.

The dilemmas, danger and tension held to the final reveal but lost its effect somewhat with an overly long closing. I feel that could have been better as a separate epilogue.

I don't often finish a book with the thought of listening to it again. To the author's credit, its an unusual enough story that I'd happily do this in the not too distant future.

A Clever & Enthralling Tale

I initially found the story a bit slow & unengaging but stuck with it, mainly due to the great narration, something that, for me, makes or breaks an Audible book. The story then picked up & pulled me in to an extent that it was difficult to tear myself away. Disturbing in parts, several twists & a tale that kept me guessing until the end - I ended up loving it & look forward to more works from this author.

Took a while to get going

Excellent narration but found the story a little slow to get started. Pretty enjoyable tale reflecting the injustice of the period

Victorian underbelly

This book looks into the Victorian society underbelly and keeps you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Dare you keep listening? I think so and it is worth it. Really enjoyed it.

Overall I’m glad I listened

I’m glad I persevered with this story but I really felt uneasy with the abuse storyline in this and didn’t see a notice pre buying or I wouldn’t have bought it as I don’t like that at all. The female narrator was good but the male part in it sounded like A.I which was so monotone.
