About this listen

You can never escape the past. Especially on the moors....

After the National Crime Agency cracks a major drug gang, junior barrister Julia McGann finds herself defending the violent enforcer Terrence Bonner. This high-profile case is a coup for her, but almost immediately things start to go wrong. Intruders break into her house, and then a young girl turns up at her door with a horrifying story to tell.

Three months later, DCI Craig Gillard and his team struggle with the shocking murder of a much-respected local headmaster, found dead in his own car. The baffling crime fills the newspapers but yields few clues. As Gillard sifts the evidence, a pair of blood-spattered gloves seems important.

Why were they used for both the murder and for the burglary at Julia’s house? What secrets is the barrister hiding...and what happened on the Derbyshire Moors two decades ago that could be the key to these shocking events?

A story of deceit, vengeance and blackmail, best-selling author Nick Louth will leave you reeling in this unpredictable crime thriller.

Really enjoyed this, although it was split between two stories , but from the disclosure and stupidity of the leading female character I lost interest in an improbable situation. How she got to be a barrister I will never know. 😳

Excitement to disbelief

very clever story that looks at things from another side. A story that in a way needed telling. very good very compelling that demands reading or listening to to the very end

a different kind of police story

The story is fine as a stand alone book but really disappointing as a much looked forward to next book in the series. Craig Gillard, the usual main character, hardly featured in the book at all. Instead it was told from the point of view of people involved in the crime. The odd couple of mentions of Craig felt like they were just thrown in here and there so the series name could be used. Disappointing

Like a lot of reviews have said this is not a DCI Giillard novel but a story from the perspective of the protagonists. It's a lot of fun and I found I was rooting for the female characters and very much getting involved in the story. I loved the twists and turns and laughed out loud some times at the strange direction the story took. I can imagine the author discussing the item that was posted at the dinner table, absolutely hilarious. Loved it, stood on its own as a fun novel but gillard was more a foot note.

More Thelma and Louise

I’ve liked all his other stories but this has all the credibility of a B52 bomber landing on the moon. The narration was excellent but the story was far-fetched to an extraordinary degree and just got worse as it went on. It’s like he decided to get another one out while he was riding on the success of his others.

Ridiculous

I've read all the other books in this series and I'm disappointed with this one. I feel that it was rushed, the main character DCI Gillard felt like a bit part, the story was flimsy and the ending. Not Nick Louth's normal standard. The End.

disappointed in this book.

Unlike the others in the series DCI Gillard hardly features in the book. So it could be read as a stand alone.

The entire plot was implausible and the actions of Julia, her friend and Destiny would not have happened. It was ok untill the head turned up but after that the plot was ridiculous and unbelievable.

Such as shame when the previous books in the series had me on the edge of my seat.

Figures crossed the next book is better!

Falls short of Louth's usual standard

Rather an abrupt ending just when I thought all was well.
Good writer, narration not so good on the female voices.

Brilliant.
