About this listen

Discover the most gripping crime thriller of the year. Winner of the Joffe Books Prize. TRUST NO ONE.

Johannesburg, 1980s Apartheid South Africa.

Augustine flees her vengeful ex-boyfriend with nothing but her child and the clothes on her back, terrified he will find her.

Because she also possesses a dangerous secret.

One he will kill for. One he will never stop hunting her for.

But Augustine is rescued by a wealthy white housewife who takes pity on her, offering both employment and refuge. Or so she thinks.

It might seem that she is safe inside the walls of the prosperous Diamond family home, but outside her every move is watched. Her sanctuary has become her prison.

In this city, where trust is a rare commodity, Augustine has made a mistake that could cost her everything.

This absolutely gripping crime thriller is perfect for fans of Deon Meyer, J.M. Coetzee, Chris Hammer, Jane Harper, Chris Whitaker or Paul Mendelson.

THE SETTING

In the heart of 1980s Johannesburg, where sprawling suburbs meet crime-ridden neighbourhoods, the line between privilege and poverty is razor-thin. The quiet, suburban streets hide dark secrets behind their pristine facades while the streets hum with tension.

Liked the overall story

Still not sure of the link between the murder suicide and the rest of the story. Tied up too quickly at the end

I kept getting lost!

The main story is gripping but I found myself getting lost between characters and events, sometimes that happens in audible rather than written versions of the book when you can’t see names written out or paragraph breaks. I also couldn’t work out where the prologue fitted in to the rest of the story and there were just too many things left unexplained. Maybe if I listen again it will make more sense but right now I can’t be bothered!

A reminder of the history of South Africa

I found the end of the story lacking in detail, with regards to the main character’s daughter, the trigger point for revenge. Also as Martin’s sister was culpable why was she not being bought to justice. One final point the cutman, did I miss something ? He was tracking Sedgit (? Sorry if misspelt I listened to this on audiobooks), then he as a character disappeared. Overall I enjoyed the book.

Boring (sorry)

Too so long to get going, so I had to give up after 2.5 hours.

Enjoyed the story

Enjoyed the storyline. Suspense and very well read. A couple of separate things going on but at the end it all gets explained and makes sense.

Gripping, but no casual read

This is a tour de force on more than one front. An ingenious and utterly unpredictable thriller, beautifully atmospheric and a psychological deep dive into black, coloured and white lives in the failing years of apartheid South Africa. I would easily have given it five stars on all counts but for its tricky plot twists and extensive dramatis personae, which make it an audiobook that demands to be listened to with complete attention, and I like to listen to books while working with my hands or exercising. Result: at the end, I was confused about what had actually happened. But it was such an outstanding feat of writing that I will give it a couple of months and listen again, taking careful note of who's who and the web of connections between them.

Gripping but end too fast and confusing

Great characters but the epilogue felt rushed. I don’t necessarily need all the ends tying up but it wasn’t a satisfying conclusion unfortunately

Told my Family about this book as they lived in South Africa for 17yrs, they took me to Cape town for my 50th, but they were in Johannesburg, Transvaal. It's was so great to hear them talk about places I have heard about. written really beautifully, love the narrative. It's nice to hear a story withing cursing. Characters were great. Thank you for this wonderful book xx

A bit long winded for me, although beautifully narrated

The start of this was good, but I found it was dragged out and was difficult to keep track of it at times. I lovedvthe narrators voice and accent though, so enjoyed listening to him read it, just didn't grasp the syiry particularly well
