About this listen

To find a murderer, you need a motive . . .

THE DETECTIVE

DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality.

THE QUESTION

The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?

THE PAST

Discovering who Brother Dominic once was only makes the picture more puzzling. He was a much-loved and respected friend, brother, son—he had no enemies. Or, at least, none that are obvious. But looking into his past reveals that he was a very wealthy man, that he sacrificed it all for his faith. For a man who has nothing, it seems strange that greed could be the motive for his murder. But greed is a sin after all . . .

I’m enjoying Sullivan’s characters and plots but think they are poorly served by the narrator. Not enough to refuse to listen, but takes enjoyment down a notch.

Really need a new narrator

Good listen I love DI Cross. Perfect understanding of spectrum! Can’t wait for The Teacher to be out on Audible….

Keeps you entertained

Twists and turns make the story addictive listening. The characters storylines are woven carefully into the story. Already looking forward to the next instalment.

Very enjoyable

I have read all 5 books and highly recommend all books. As always it is sad when you come to the end of the last book, but hopeful it will not be the end of DS Cross.

Great 5 book series

You can't help but like D.S. Cross and the cases that he gets involved in. The almost reaction of the world to his "on the spectrum" personality is almost comedic and from these reactions, it is becomes quickly clear who the goodies are and who the baddies. This is a story set amongst Benedictine monks and the story that unfolds is interesting and even a bit unusual. Much enjoyed and waiting for the next in the series...

Another good D.S. Cross story

Loving this series and this is my favourite story yet. George Cross is a wonderfully drawn character. Clever, funny and entertaining, I highly recommend these books!

My favourite in this series yet

I love these books and will be sad when I get to the end of the series, so brilliantly thought out and written, you always think you know who has done it but there is always a twist, another great read

Excellent

I’m steaming through the series. I love them! Really enjoyed this one too. Great set of characters and wonderful narration.
I will say though some of the words are mixed up, not sure if that is the book or the transcript for narration, but you get the idea of who’s speaking, even if the character had been given the wrong name!

Another great title.

I’ve listened to all the stories in this series and they’re extremely good; well written and entertaining. Surely they deserve a better narrator? The first two books had a fairly dull reader but the rest have been read by someone who doesn’t seem to have a grasp of basic English pronunciation. Isn’t there an editor on hand while they’re being recorded? I speeded up his delivery to avoid falling asleep but found myself grinding my teeth at the mispronunciations in exasperation instead.
Give the respect due to this talented author by commissioning a worthy narrator for the rest of the series.

Get a better narrator

Yet another convoluted case, solved in no small part, by DS Cross’ tenacious, insightful and unique abilities.
He has become one of my favourite detectives, along with a supporting cast of characters, all bringing their talents to the cause.
Special mention for the narrator, who yet again adds a wonderful tone and pace to the tale.

Another exceptional case.
