Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris, read by Aja Naomi King, Joniece Abbott-Pratt, Bahni Turpin and Heather Alicia Sims.

A highlight for 2021 from: Guardian, Time, Independent, Evening Standard, BBC, Stylist, Irish Times, i, Harper's Bazaar, Washington Post, Fortune, Entertainment Weekly and The Sun

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and the micro-aggressions, she’s thrilled when Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events cause Nella to become Public Enemy Number One and Hazel, the Office Darling.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: Leave Wagner. Now.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realises that there is a lot more at stake than her career.

A whip-smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.

An easy listen

Read beautifully
I Felt the main character could have a bit more grit….that’s not life though, is it? It’s not how it really works. It gets to the best of us. Where we start complying before we even realise it because let’s face it. It is easier!

I liked it.

Stunning debut

Definitely a novel best read or listened to cold without too much prior knowledge as it slowly unfolds its plot. The narrators did well in bringing the characters to life.

SBW

I haven’t read ‘the devil wears prada’ or ‘get out’ so this was all new to me. Educational and interesting. Bit slow at first then moved swiftly

Great idea but story didn't grab me

The book tackles important topics in interesting ways but I was unsure of ending.

It was ok

I was really enjoying the story at the beginning but when the twist came I felt lost, which is a shame.

Loved it. Great read

loved it couldn't put it down. was right there with it until 'magic' hair grease then it felt a bit silly but still couldn't put it down. I've felt all those feelings of desperately trying to fit in but never belonging being stabbed in the back by the person who's supposed to have it. felt the micro aggressions and racism in the work place and more. Magic grease to make myself more acceptable and amenable in the white mans world to subjugate my thoughts and feelings to fit in is just another type of slavery being suppressed just to get by and work in the white mans world.......but if it stops all that pain ive felt over the years.....I'm pretty sure i would take the grease. .....don't know what i would have expected other than hair grease, brainwashing, cults or just regular people being regular arse-hats but drugs in hair grease i dont know. but i still enjoyed this book very much indeed it made me think. narration was great could clearly tell all characters apart. great feeling and performance and probably one of my favourite reads this year. and narration was a big part of that too. I've read many good books on hear ruined by shitty narration. this was definitely not one. five stars across the board.

Great novel, Inconsistencies with the voice over.

I haven't finished it yet but really struggling with the voiceover artists. The prologue was great, the voices after sound strange... Slightly monotone.... I may buy the book instead. A great story though. If you can get past the voices, it has the potential to be gripping.

This Book!

This book is incredible. I was on the edge of my seat while listening. When I thought I knew what was happening - I did not!

I did find it a little hard to get into to start with but it is definitely worth pushing through that! 10/10 would recommend!
