About this listen

Forget George and the dragon. Forget Sir Lancelot and tales of knightly exploits. This is dirty, bloody work. This is violent, visceral action. This is a mercenary knight as you've never seen one before.

Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders.

But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or, worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job.

The abbey is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with. Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war....

Miles has created a bevy of characters in a chivalrous world where mystical creature run rampant. I really looked forward to this. The detail to the Knights and the fight scenes were first class. I did find a little too much detail at times and I found this story felt too long and I did get bored in parts.
I was unsure if I would continue with the story and have decided after much debate to go on with it when I can as I hope the story gets better as it goes. We shall see.

A well formed story and world

Great story, really enjoyed it but the editing was horrendous
So many sentences cut off randomly, at first I thought it was meant to be that way
Doesn't take away from the story too much, still recommend it
Sort out your editing, ruining good authors books

Great story, terrible editing

The days are not long enough. A decent chunky story that grips you by the brain and doesn't let go! Interesting storyline weaving too.

Pretty darn good😀

All of the characters felt purposeful and very intrigued to carry on reading the series

Great characters and story!

a simple story that gets a little bit overblown with complex characters and their motivations with the simple feeling of who will live and who will die.
look forward to the next book.

Such a brilliant and engaging story. It took a little while to get used to the format but once I did I was thoroughly engaged. The narrator was brilliant.

Fantastic

Great story, good narration (drops one star for inconsistent accents). Well plotted, thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Excellent!

base story was ok but too many characters viewpoints made it over complicated and hard to follow. there are better siege stories out there.

Complicated

liked how the language evoked the period.
very much a medieval fantasy!
found the story a bit methodical and the battles were not exciting.
this may have been because of the narrators' stoic delivery.

okay but didn't grip me.
