Summary
Bring nature into your home with the uplifting true story of the couple who lost everything and embarked on a journey of salvation across the South West coastline, brought to you by Penguin.
Just days after Raynor Winn learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood.
With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path.
Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, their walk becomes a remarkable journey.
The Salt Path is an honest and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world.
Read by author Raynor Winn, this deeply felt, personal tale is a beacon of universal strength.
Critic reviews
"A beautiful, thoughtful, lyrical story of homelessness, human strength and endurance." (Guardian)
"The landscape is magical: shape-shifting seas and smugglers' coves; myriads of sea birds and mauve skies. It's a tale of triumph: of hope over despair; of love over everything." (Sunday Times)
"An astonishing narrative of two people dragging themselves from the depths of despair along some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country and ultimately finding themselves." (Independent)

A rollercoaster real-life adventure
I love a true story and this one is like a heavier, grittier, 500 Mile Walkies . Take the journey with Raynor and Moth... heart in mouth... until the climax.

Narration is Authentic At Least
A lot of comments here about the narration. It is fine because it is authentic. She may come across as complaining a lot but that is what is happening in the story. I wouldn’t be put off by that - and you soon get into the rhythm of their walk

Bad narration
Narrator has a very nasal diction and almost no cadence to the reading. It could have been more enjoyable but for this.

Inspirational
What a beautiful book. It’s premise, a long-married 50-something couple reduced to homelessness and the possible hopelessness of a terminal illness diagnosis, setting off to walk the SW Coast Path, with a tent, sleeping bags and no money. What they learn about themselves, the path and the world along the way has stayed with me and will make you think hard about what’s important in your life. As a first-time author, Ray Winn has a natural, poetic talent. And, although author-narration is often a big mistake (Ed Balls and John le Carré, I’m looking at you), in this case, it was a perfect decision.

Amazing story, beautifully told
Ray tells their story with great observations, tenderness, and laugh-out-loud funny at times. Her point about the majority of homeless people being like you or I - how easy it was for their world to fall apart - is enduring.
