About this listen

England, 1817

Captain Lacey takes a post as a secretary at the Sudbury School in Berkshire, a school for sons of the wealthiest merchants and bankers in England. As soon as he arrives, Lacey discovers that he's been hired for more than his letter-writing skills. A series of disturbing pranks have kept the school in an uproar, and the headmaster expects Lacey to discover the identity of the prankster.

The problems intensify when a groom from the school's stables turns up dead in a lock of the nearby canal. A Romany is arrested for the murder, and Lacey is the only person who believes him innocent.

As Lacey works to discover what happened, he gets drawn into the secrets of Marianne Simmons, the actress who lived upstairs from Lacey in London. Marianne swears Lacey to silence, which puts a new strain on his friendship with Grenville. Meanwhile the intrigue surrounding the murder becomes as murky as the waters of the canal itself and puts Lacey and Grenville into deadly danger.

The Sudbury School Murders won the RT Book Reviews Reviewers Choice Award for Best Historical Mystery.

a very good listen

Where does The Sudbury School Murders rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Along with the rest of the series, one of the best historical mysteries I have listened to.

What did you like best about this story?

It kept my interest from beginning to end and it was really well read.

Have you listened to any of James Gillies’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Only the Captain Lacey books, but he would make me look closely at any other books he reads. I am sight disabled and cannot read any more, so the way someone reads a book is very important to me. I cannot revert to Kindle or hard copy if I do not like the voice of the reader .

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did in fact listen to the book in one go. Even while cooking the dinner!

Any additional comments?

Over the years I have bought many audio books, some 2,600 +, from Audible. I enjoy mysteries and historical novels and this is one of the best combination of the two. I have on occasion had to return books because, although I liked the book, I could not like the reader, so it is such a pleasure when a good book is read so well.
