The Voyage of the Sable Keech is the second book in Neal Asher's Spatterjay series, following on from The Skinner.

Sable Keech is a walking dead man. Was he resurrected because he was infected by the Spatterjay virus, or it took place late in a tank of seawater? Taylor Bloc wants to know the truth. He also wants more – adulation, power, control – and will go to any lengths to achieve them.

An ancient hive mind has sent an agent to this uncertain world. Does it merely want to obtain the poison 'sprine' that is crucial to immortality? Erlin, still faced with the ennui of immortality, is interrupted by an angry whelkus titanicus, and begins a strange journey.

Deep in the ocean the Spatterjay virus has wrought a terrible change that will affect them all. Something long-dormant is breaking free. And Sniper, its Warden, finally receives his new drone shell. It's better than his old one: powerful engines, more lethal weapons, thicker armour. He's going to need them.

Just needs some pauses as the story changes to different characters perspectives. Not many books have you rooting for a giant welk. Still enjoying sniper

I love the detail, world-building of Neal Asher’s Polity books, and this didn’t disappoint.

I give the narration only four points though. I loved his use of accents, especially the Welsh accent for golem, but his mispronunciation of a few words irritated me enough to knock off a star. Petty of me perhaps.

One of Ashers better stories, with a dry wit missing in some of his most recent books.
William Gaminaras narration is very good , and while his choice of a yorkshire accent for a war drone seems odd on the surface, it works perfectly.
The flaw is there arent always pauses in between scene changes.
Otherwise this is one of my favourite audiobooks (and i have a great many)

Was a great continuation of the original story - set 10 years after the Skinner - with the right amount of change to Spatterjay life to make it a plausible return Oceanside to the planet.

Hooper humour was there as always a long with many familiar faces. Apart from one obvious twist the story weaves its way to a big finish once again, couldn't stop listening as I reached the finish.

I don't know if it could be considered as good without having first read The Skinner but who apart from a corrupted war drone would consider reading book 2 first !

Already bought book 3 which is the best compliment I can give it.

Since my trip to the little Flint am definitely now a fully reincarnated Asher fan !!!

More classic Asher goodness

Along with The Skinner this has long been one of my favourite scifi books. A very satisfying mix of comedy and horror and the Hoopers themselves are some of the best characters around. The story skips asking and it’s all great fun. Some of the narrators voice choices are a little hard to understand “Welsh” androids for one but why not?

Good narration and a very exciting story. Most of the main characters from the Skinner are here with some great plot twists. I am looking forward to the final volume of the trilogy Orbus
