About this listen

Things in Jars is an enchanting Victorian detective novel that explores what it is to be human in inhumane times, from Costa Award winner and twice BBC Radio 2 Book Club author Jess Kidd.

London, 1863. Bridie Devine, the finest female detective of her age, is taking on her toughest case yet. Reeling from her last job and with her reputation in tatters, a remarkable puzzle has come her way. Christabel Berwick has been kidnapped. But Christabel is no ordinary child. She is not supposed to exist.

As Bridie fights to recover the stolen child she enters a world of fanatical anatomists, crooked surgeons and mercenary showmen. Anomalies are in fashion, curiosities are the thing and fortunes are won and lost in the name of entertainment. The public love a spectacle, and Christabel may well prove the most remarkable spectacle London has ever seen.

This book has been sitting in my library for about a year. I had started it twice and could not get past the prologue which is written in a very poetic, gothic style. However this 3rd time I persevered and once the story started at Chapter one and I got used to the writing style this book totally hooked me . A weird tale of Victorian medical experiments, kidnapped children and a wonderful female cast of characters . I have not read anything quite like this before . It is a detective story with supernatural elements and a gothic twist . The narrator did a wonderful
Job with all the different characters and accents.

3rd try is a breeze !

A bit of historical fiction I really enjoyed. Loved the character of Bridie and wonder if there's a sequel or a series. Overall performance felt a bit stilted to begin with but definitely got better towards the end. I will certainly look out for more from Jess Kidd.

Brilliant plot. Great characters!

Loved this audiobook, it took me a few chapters to get into it but once it got going I could not wait to hear what happened next. The characters were beautifully brought to life and the story cleverly woven together. It is not something I would usually choose but I'm so glad I did and would highly recommend.

Fantastic novel that left me sobbing like a babe. The narrator was fantastic overall, my only observation was that she tended to place the emphasis on the wrong words and I did wonder if she had read the book in advance of performing it. However, her characterisation was brilliant. I'd really recommend this title.

Wonderfully written, emotive and macabre

Weird but wonderful - a ghost, a mermaid, and a giant maid - all make for a fascinating tale beautifully narrated. Highly recommend. Enjoy.

What a treat!
