  • ADHD and creativity
    Feb 12 2023

In this podcast episode, I talk about the relationship between ADHD and creativity. I share my own experiences growing and being creative from a very young age, and discuss how being creative could be linked to ADHD. A lack of inhibition and the ability to think outside of the box, which are common traits of individuals with ADHD, could contribute to their creative abilities. Research has shown that people with ADHD are more likely to conceive of original ideas, and daydreaming may also play a role in increasing creativity. I conclude by sharing examples of other famous creative people believed to have ADHD and challenge the listeners to consider their own experiences.

  • ADHD and exercising

Over 10 years ago, I was overweight and didn't exercise. But then, I saw an ad to hike up Mount Kilimanjaro and impulsively signed up. The experience was tough, but it lit a fire within me. I started exercising and lost all my excess weight, ran my first half marathon, and even summated Mount Toubkal. Now, I exercise almost daily and understand the connection between a healthy body and a healthy mind. As someone with ADHD, I know how hard it can be to stay motivated to exercise. My advice: JFDI! Start small, use rewards, gamify your workout, choose something fun and enjoy the process. Remember, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, especially for those with ADHD who are at a higher risk for obesity and Alzheimer's disease.

  • Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD
    Jan 28 2023

    Send us a text

On today's episode, I talk about my experience growing up with undiagnosed ADHD. It's important to note that everyone with ADHD is different, but I share some hopefully relatable experiences from my childhood. I have always felt a little bit different from a young age. When I was really young I had a strong visual ability and was very creative. I couldn't understand why the other children were drawing the sky as one blue line at the top of the page when the 'sky' was the air all around us and I refused to follow the crowd. On the flip side I had terrible feelings of shame and rejection and almost physical pain if I thought that I had done something wrong.

I also couldn't read a book until I was well into my 20s. I only really started reading novels as a way to cope with boredom while traveling on the train (pre smartphone era). One of my other special talents is interrupting people but as a way of connecting and empathising, not for reasons of rudeness or narcissism.

  • ADHD and learning a foreign language
    Jan 21 2023

    Send us a Text Message.

As someone who has struggled with ADHD for much of my life, I've often wondered about its impact on my ability to learn a foreign language. Eight years ago, I moved to Italy and began learning Italian. Despite being 35 at the time, I found it exciting and enjoyed the process. However, when I later moved to Basel and attempted to learn German, I found it virtually impossible and still can't speak a word of it today. In contrast, learning French in the French-speaking part of Switzerland was a lot easier.

After reflecting on my language learning experiences, I've realized that ADHD can certainly impact our ability to learn a foreign language. ADHD can affect our executive functioning skills such as working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. Additionally, symptoms such as hyperactivity and impulsivity can make it difficult to pay attention and stay focused in a classroom or meeting setting.

I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences on this topic because there isn't much information available about the relationship between ADHD and language learning. I plan to do more research on this subject and would love to hear from others who may have had similar experiences. Let's start a conversation about how ADHD may impact language learning and find ways to overcome these challenges.

  • Hyperfocusing with ADHD
    Jan 15 2023

    Send us a Text Message.

For those of you with ADHD, you may be familiar with the concept of hyperfocus, where you become so engrossed in a topic or activity that you shut the world out. This can be both a blessing and a curse, as it can lead to periods of intense productivity and creativity, but can also lead to wasting time and losing track of time.

Personally, I have had a love-hate relationship with hyperfocus throughout my life. I've had hyperfocuses on topics that were not particularly useful, such as getting lost in Wikipedia and YouTube videos about Alanis Morissette, but I've also had hyperfocuses that have been incredibly beneficial, such as my passion for video editing.

About 10 years ago, I started a blog and began filming myself exercising and participating in races. I found it easy to pick up the technology and began spending hours watching tutorials on YouTube and using iMovie to edit my videos. This eventually led to creating content that was widely shared and even monetized.

However, the downside is that the hyperfocus can't be controlled or turned on on demand. It's a random occurrence that can make it hard to focus on work or school projects. But, if you're lucky, your hyperfocus may align with your passion or career.

Hyperfocus can be a superpower, but it's important to be mindful of how much time you're spending on a particular topic or activity and make sure it's not negatively affecting other areas of your life.
