About this listen

When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as "a rare account". Newsweek pronounced it "fascinating". The San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who 'came to scoff' may remain 'to pray." Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East.

This audio edition, featuring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley's masterful narration, contains the complete text of Paramahansa Yogananda's life story, an absorbing account of a singular search for Truth. Yogananda describes his experiences with modern-day saints and illuminated masters of India, and presents a definitive introduction to the whole science and philosophy of Yoga.

This book, if read carefully might just change your life. I first read it four years ago - like a fairytale I must admit. Then Michael Singer mentioned Yogananda in his book “The Untethered soul”, and that made me red read it and re listen to the audio. Suddenly it just spoke to me. It’s a beautiful book and at the same time its a sad book. As he had to leave India to help us in the West to find inner peace. It’s a book about faith, hope and love but also commitment and sacrifice. You do what you have to do. You take part in the daily life, you do your bit. Then you meditate and grow. Self pity and depression has no place in that and by some magic it’s no longer needed to sustain or define you. You are in my mind - finally able to find the true you and shine and be the divine being you have been all the time. Of course there are ups and downs in this journey but if you are sincere in your seeking then the 18 lessons within the fellowship will guide you even further. This Self Realisation Fellowship was set up by Yogananda and it was done solely to help and lighten the life of us in the West. I see it as a huge sacrifice from his part.
It’s a lovely book.
Thank you 🙏

A collection of stories which take you through the main Spiritual experiences across the whole life of Paramahansa Yogananda. The narration is great, and taking the stories with a very large pinch of salt helps them go down easier. I definitely want some of whatever he was taking!

"Ejaculatory!"

A deep dive into the mystical and supernatural through the eyes of a true Saint.
Is it worth the money or a precious credit?
Many times over.
What will I get out of it?
Expanded view of life for sure. But also renewed faith in Divine protection and guidance.
Does Yogananda's message conflict with other religious faiths such as Jewish, Christian, Muslim or Buddhist etc?
No, Yogananda reveres them all. If anything you will be strengthened in your current tradition.
What about the narration?
There is not another person on the planet that could have read this particular work better for its intended audience.
If you listen carefully you will realise by the end that Ben Kingsley was no random assignment for the task!
In summary this is a beautiful book and the superb narration carried me effortlessly through it from start to finish.

What kept me listening to the end was the proficient use of language and the low frequency words. It is hard to find this in a modern novel. However, the story could be boring at times and there is not much of a transition between the chapters. Good read for the spiritual people, but a hard and long read for most of the audience. I was listening to this before sleep and might have missed 10-15% of it as the story was not captivating to keep me listening. I am giving 4 out for 5 for the language use.

masterful use of language and plenty of low frequency words, but the story is boring in some chapters

Ever since I had heard about this book, I was longing to read and intrigued to know more about Yogananda. It was unfortunate that I was unaware of his existence and his work even being born in Calcutta in a Bengali Hindu family. I guess everything has its own timing, as I now realise from his own writing.
This book was a marvelous experience that further enriched my thoughts n notions about spirituality, Hindu philosophy of religion and the cosmos and most importantly it came at a time, I was desperately seeking it. Through this book Yogananda has transparently portrayed his life, his realisation of God and his concept of divine spiritualilty existing universally in simple yet powerful words. I had some truly powerful moments where I almost could experience the divine grace which he spoke so enchantingly stirring the soul. I can fully recommend this book to all those who are seeking the higher plane, the knowledge of our existence and believe in life changing experiences. Happy listening :)

P.S talking about listening, Ben Kingsley did a fine job in reading, albeit it was really funny when he pronounced some of the colloquial words in an accent alien to the language!

Enchantingly transformative
