About this listen

The long-awaited fifth installment in Garth Nix's New York Times best-selling Old Kingdom series, for listeners who enjoy series by Rae Carson, Kristin Cashore, Scott Westerfeld, and Cassandra Clare.

Goldenhand takes place six months after the events of Abhorsen and follows the novella Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case, which is featured in Across the Wall.

Lirael lost one of her hands in the binding of Orannis, but now she has a new hand, one of gilded steel and Charter Magic. On a dangerous journey, Lirael returns to her childhood home, the Clayr's Glacier, where she was once a Second Assistant Librarian. There a young woman from the distant North brings her a message from her long-dead mother, Arielle. It is a warning about the Witch with No Face. But who is the Witch, and what is she planning? Lirael must use her new powers to save the Old Kingdom from this great danger - and it must be forestalled not only in the living world but also in the cold, remorseless river of Death.

Excellent to hear more from all our beloved characters again, some things have changed but it's easy to fall right back into the now familiar world of the Old Kingdom!

The return of all your favourite characters

To begin with it was a bit jarring to hear a female voice - only because I'm used to Tim Curry - but Heather Wilds did a great job of bringing the characters to life. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and immediately started from the beginning again.

It's good to be back in The Old Kingdom

I love the Old Kingdom and hearing the earlier books read by Tim Curry and Graeme Malcolm was awesome, but Heather Wilds makes this fantastic book dull and boring with her lack lustre voice and monotonous mechanical tone. I only hope Goldenhand is re read at some point in future by someone with more depth and character to their voice.

A great book made deathly dull

Good plot good characters and builds on previous. Narration was great. Onto the next book

Best story yet

Love this entire series, and although Goldenhand isn't the strongest book, it is still a great experience. Developing Lirael further as she progresses as the Abhorsen in waiting, Goldenhand introduces some new characters whilst drawing on the key previous names from the past books in the series.

However, Heather Wilds narration is nothing but bland and awkward and really takes away from the enjoyment. My advice, buy the physical book and read it.

Another great story from Nix but let down by Wilds

I adore the Old Kingdom series. Unlike many sequels, I found this to be very good. I say that if you love Sabriel and Liriel, definately give Clariel and Golden Hand a go. I enjoyed them all.

In my opinion, the narration of Golden hand does not compare with the excellence of the first three, but don't let that put you off. The narration is actually not too bad, and you get used to it. A very good book with a good ending.

Excellent

I just can't bear to listen to this woman's voice. Such a shame as the story is fantastic.

Unfortunate choice of narrator

Gripping from the first line and continued right to the end! On to the next in this brilliant series.

Fantastic

Poor intonation by the narrator, which almost ruined the book for me. It was like she forgot she was reading an actual story, and was just going through the motions of reading sentences out loud. Disappointing that poor reviews will now reflect badly on was is yet another brilliant Old Kingdom story.

Very poor narration of a very good book

I'm not sure what's going on with the narrator, but she had no rhythm or tempo to her reading. It was so monotonous.
Some of her voices had life to them though. But otherwise it was just so hard to follow the book with no emotion or emphasis to the narration.

Amazing story read by a robot
