About this listen

Welcome to The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts - a luxurious, clandestine college dedicated to the fine art of murder where earnest students study how best to "delete" their most deserving victim.

Who hasn't wondered for a split second what the world would be like the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you've probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death.

The campus of this "Poison Ivy League" college-its location unknown to even those who study there-is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate...and where one's mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.

Prepare for an education you'll never forget. A delightful mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining audiobook about well-intentioned would-be murderers you'll ever hear.

Critic reviews

"A case study in the droll amusements of homicide, Rupert Holmes's send-up of higher education and even higher crimes and misdemeanors will keep you up at night." (Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked)

"With dry humor and an eye for hidden clues, Rupert Holmes imagines a secret Hogwarts-like school that teaches the fine art of pulling off the perfect (and perfectly deserved) murder...utterly creative and deliciously diabolical." (Alafair Burke, New York Times bestselling author)

"A college with a degree in Homicide? Only Rupert Holmes could make murder laugh-out-loud funny. This book isn't clever-it's fiendishly clever. And the twists and tricks and endless surprises make me want to sign up for another semester!" (R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps and Fear Street)

Will listen again!

I normally have an audio book playing, this was really good, the narration was easy on the ear and the story was entertaining. The only disappointment is that I have looked to see if there’s another in the series and this seems at the moment to be the only one. I will definitely be listening to this again

Mixed review

I really enjoyed the premise of the book and the narration was great but I really struggled to stay focussed on the story about half way through. I was gripped by the start and fell back into it towards the end but something about the middle of the book lost me.
That said, I relistened a couple of times and overall I really enjoyed this book.

Entertaining and imaginative

An entertaining mixture of murder mystery, tentative romance and comedy, which ranged from sly innuendo to pretty dark.

Some of the humour came simply from the contrast between the two excellent narrators.

My only "hmm" was the almost immediate acceptance of non-US characters of the nature and teaching methods employed by a US-style university-level institution, but that's not a major issue.

Great narration

Loved this audiobook combination of NPH and Simon Vance. I laughed,I cried and I had some freezer moments. The emotions and struggles of Cliff, Jemma and Dulcie were so intriguing and like riding a rollercoaster.
The murder academy of McMasters was an interesting concept and I enjoyed the Professors and Students. My only negative was the neat wrapped up in a bow ending but I would gladly read a sequel.

Have not enjoyed a book so much in ages. Clever language and references (Nora from A Doll’s House!)

Excellent narration and seamless transitions between plots!

Just didn’t hold my attention

Found the story long, messy and rambling, just didn’t hold my attention at all. Not for me
