I'm always the one asking 'why do we say that?' and this book finally dished out some answers – often hilarious ones – about common idioms, even touching on Shakespeare's influence and, hilariously, what llamas have to do with it all. The way it’s organized by theme made it super easy to dip in and out, and I've already been sharing tidbits like the real story behind 'buttering someone up.' JD Hart’s narration is fantastic; he really brings the quirky facts and stories to life. I grabbed this on a whim and ended up reading it cover to cover. It’s packed with weird, funny, and surprisingly useful explanations for stuff we say every day. I’ve already annoyed my friends with “did you know?” facts, but they’re into it too! The writing is casual and entertaining without trying too hard. It’s like trivia night meets language class, but the cool version. If you like useless knowledge that’s secretly useful, you’ll love this.

I am fascinated by idiomatic expressions and their origins so this listen was a terrific find. I don't think one can absorb all the info in one sitting so I look forward to going back to this, and sharing the sources of these expressions as they come up in everyday language. I also heard some new ones that were completely unfamiliar to me (All hat and no cattle). I can also imagine English language students finding it useful to add some color to their language.
